MIL-STD-1553 Training Workshop

The MIL-STD-1553 data bus is presently used in many advanced military programs and is also used to update systems in older programs.  The applications are expanding rapidly requiring more trained engineers to deal effectively with the technology. The MIL-STD-1553 Training Seminar presents a thorough discussion of MIL-STD-1553 theory, application, and testing.  Problem areas in the standard are clarified and available options are examined.  Two lab sessions illustrate the material being taught by providing students with “hands-on” experience in identifying 1553 communication and troubleshooting remote terminal problems.

The instructor has over thirty years of experience in the design and development of multiplex equipment for data bus applications.  In the Seminar, he uses a well-rounded approach of lectures, lab sessions, visuals, notes, question and answer, and samples from 1553 manufacturers to communicate concepts in a clear and dynamic manner.  He provides personal assistance during the lab sessions.

The 1553 Seminar notebook contains over 130 pages of class notes, MIL-STD-1553, and information on 1553 testing.  Vendor literature on 1553 related products is also made available.

* The class will be divided into groups. Each group will have a 1-hour Lab Session in the afternoon.

LAB SESSIONS

The Lab Sessions are an integral part of the MIL-STD-1553 Seminar. They are designed to provide the students with a demonstration of 1553 communication and “hands-on experience” in troubleshooting remote terminal problems. There are two one-hour Lab Sessions for each student. Lab stations are set up with two to four students per station. Since the number of students in each Lab Session is limited, the instructor can provide personal assistance to the students.

In the first Lab Session, a bus scenario of six (6) non-broadcast messages is used to demonstrate 1553 communication and illustrate the material being taught in the Seminar. Using an oscilloscope, the individual command, status, and data words of the messages are viewed, and the formats are identified. The bits of command words are decoded to identify the various fields of terminal address, transmit/receive bit, subaddress/mode, and data word count/mode code. Pulse widths, response times, and intermessage gaps are measured as specified by the 1553 standard. RT-RT transfers are distinguished from BC-RT and RT-BC transfers. The order in which the command, status, and data words are transferred, as well as the number of each, is identified. Mode Commands are distinguished from other commands, and their functions are identified.

The “hands-on experience” in troubleshooting remote terminal problems is provided in the second Lab Session by simulating various problems in nine of the ten simulated remote terminals. By creating and sending messages to a remote terminal, the problem with the remote terminal is identified. Using an oscilloscope in combination with 1553 test equipment, students gain valuable practice in troubleshooting problems and apply the material taught in the Seminar.

The greatest value of the Lab Sessions is the student’s involvement with the concepts being taught. Interaction is accomplished by providing the student with a view of what is transpiring on the bus. Using the oscilloscope, the student transitions from reading words on a page to visualizing how bits are encoded, understanding how word formats differ, and observing the appearance of a sequence of messages. The student experiences the trouble-shooting process in identifying problems in remote terminals. Because a picture is worth a thousand words, the Lab Sessions will help the student gain a greater understanding of MIL-STD-1553.
