COURSE SYLLABUS

  1. EW/ELINT Terms and Concepts: A thorough introduction to the EW/ELINT jargon and maze of acronyms used within both communities.
  2. Core Radar Concepts: Radiofrequency (RF) selection and propagation impacts, pulse train, radar scan types, beam formation, radar cross section (RCS), common modes of operation, and radar displays. A survey of modern radar technologies, including active electronically scanned arrays (AESA), multifunction radar, non-monostatic radar, networked radar, and low-probability of intercept (LPI) radar.
  3. EW/ELINT Receiver Technologies: Comparison of major receiver features, qualitative comparison of receiver types, crystal video receivers, superheterodyne receivers, instantaneous frequency measurement (IFM) receivers, channelized and Bragg cell receivers, Microscan receivers, software-defined radio receivers, ELINT intercept geometry considerations, probability of intercept, one-way link equation. EW and ELINT receiver types are compared/contrasted.
  4. Emitter Locating Techniques: The angle of arrival accuracy requirements, triangulation, time difference of arrival (TDOA), frequency difference of arrival (FDOA), interferometry, and antenna designs.
  5. Basic Database Statistics: A basic look at the mean, median, average, standard deviation, histograms, etc., that help define EW/ELINT databases.
